Dear Linden Lab®,
Your recent change of policy regarding the usage of your trademarks — Second Life®, Linden Lab®, and others registered by Linden Research Inc. — will effectively prevent the operation of the very vibrant community of bloggers, forum posters, websites, community portals, and even 3rd party services, that have provided Linden Lab® with links and driving traffic to your blog, and raising brand awareness for free for your product Second Life®.

[Note this is a parody.]
Today Linden Labs announced that it had sent Cease and Desist letters to the United Nations,
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, and the Republic of Sierra Leone for infringing on their trademark of "SL." The reason listed is that Sierra Leone's TLD of "sl" infringes on Linden Labs' trademark of those letters in the realm of computer services.
The Linden Lab's business department has said that they will vigorously enforce the trademarking of SL, and plans lawsuits against
Microsoft,
SL Industries and is considering others against
SL Start.
In the press release the California based private company said that it's lawyers are researching sending a C&D letter to the Oxford English Dictionary for using words like "slime", "slippery," "slide," and "slander." According to the company all uses of S and L together constitute potential infringement.

So I was most of the way through a post about the legal headaches being caused by Linden Lab’s overly complex yet woefully inadequate
new trademark policy, and Hamlet Au went and screwed everything up. Turns out he decided to actually
ask the Lindens about the policy and the ensuing controversy, and
got an answer back from their PR rep (see update at the bottom of the linked page). Since it appears that there will be some sort of clarification of the policy from the Lindens soon, I am going to hold my post and pray it becomes moot after the announcement. I’d much rather have wasted a couple hours writing about this issue than have to deal with it any longer.

Non, Sire, c’est… well, actually, we’re not quite sure.
Following the call by the eminent Ms Gwyneth Llewelyn for a general strike of the gallant fraternity (and sorority) of bloggers against the unbearable tyranny brought upon us by His Majesty’s legal and marketing departments (as documented here, here, and here), this blog will be on strike from today April 15th until April 18th 2008. No post will be available for perusal but those linked here, and none will be added until then.

Taking it Slow
It's been about a month since I last posted here at the MindBlizzard blog. Some havhave thought it for audacious reasons, like 'banning Second Life' because of the new Trademark Regulations, and I wish it were true.
