Disney is shuttering Virtual Magic Kingdom. Nobody knows how many active users it has these days, and Disney is of course moving aggressively into more virtual worlds, encouraging users to switch to Toontown, Pirates of the Caribbean Online, and Club Penguin. But as longtime virtual worlders know, that’s not acceptable to the current community, who not only have a lengthy thread on the discussion boards, but have also started threads even on the new coverage elsewhere begging for their world to remain open.

Disney cans Virtual Magic Kingdom MMO

With so much news on launches of child-focused virtual worlds and MMOs, it's unusual to hear news about one shutting down. However, given that the company doing the shutting down is Disney, it's more about nudging users into its newer worlds, rather than any lack of faith in the sector.

I just returned from Orlando, Florida, and five days at Walt Disney World. On the very last shuttle bus ride we took (the Disney “Magical Express” back to the decidedly un-magical security checkpoint at Orlando International Airport), they showed a promotional movie on the bus, doing everything short of casting voodoo spells to get you to come back. One of the last things in this movie was a short commercial inviting everyone to visit VMK.com, the virtual online version of DisneyWorld. That was yesterday, April 14.
