I must confess: while covering the rescue of collapsing banks and the more or less concerted efforts by central banks to keep the international financial system functioning, I somehow missed the importance of the price hike for open spaces in Second Life. The price hike is rather drastic and Linden Lab tries to justify this saying the openspace - in fact light use areas for countryside of ocean simulations - is being used far more heavily than anticipated.

Update regarding the Openspaces announcement

Following our previous post on changes to the Openspace products we have had a great deal of feedback from the community, particularly in the forum thread but also via email and IMs. I would like to offer up some feedback of our own.
The first thing I would like to do, is to thank everyone for taking time to give feedback. We’ve read it all, including the forum posts, and almost all of you have made your points constructively and clearly. We are blessed with highly passionate and intelligent residents and that makes for good dialogue, which we really appreciate.
Secondly, let me be clear when I say that we are listening to what you are saying to us on this issue. If you’re wondering whether to post that forum entry, please do. They all get read, even if we’re not able to reply to them all.
Thirdly, I wanted to clarify one issue. As mentioned in the post, Openspaces were intended for space, empty areas of ocean or forest. Take a look at the Knowledgebase article description here. By that criteria, the large majority of Openspaces have more going on than was the original intent. We are not suggesting this is a bad thing, and of course we’re delighted that people have found them to be so useful. And we’re not saying that everyone is abusing resources. We are saying that the use has changed, and continues to do so as people find more creative ways to use them. So the revised pricing is about recognising that change of use and the additional costs and value associated with it.
Over the next few days we will be continuing to review the feedback and keep the dialogue flowing with as many of you as we can. If you have something to say, the forum is the best place to say it. It is clear that some Openspaces are being used as they were intended originally, so we recognise that there are different levels of usage that we need to account for.
We will blog again soon, once we have had time to review. Be assured that we are aware of the strong feelings you have about this decision. In the meantime, please keep the conversation flowing, constructive and on topic. More from us soon.
Although comments are Off for this post initially, they will be opened tomorrow when I’ll be around to read/respond to them.

Openspace Fee Raise Continues to Burn — and Flame

Linden Lab’s decision to raise tier maintenance fees on all Openspace sims continues to provoke ire since my last article. In approximately 48 hours, the Forum “discussion” has racked up 169 pages, with a high proportion of posts filled with bile. This, frankly, is one reason why I don’t weigh in on important matters at the Forums; the level of vituperation gets out of hand. I’m not sure if anybody is being listened to if there is an actual workable alternative to the raise, or if anyone at Linden Lab is still reading the messages.

There's been a lot of turmoil due to the announcement about Open Space sims, but I'm not sure what else LL could've done (aside from anticipating the problem, which would've saved everyone a lot of grief). Honestly, disregarding the people who misrepresented the OS sims when renting them out, or those who ran businesses on them, it was probably a lovely but brief period when some were able to have a blank canvas to create their own place on the grid. I can hear the raspberries from here when I say that, though, but the pragmatic part of me can only shrug and say, "Well, if they are not feasible they just have to go - at least you had them for a while."

From Naughty Dreamscape:
I think there is ONE way to get Linden Labs attention. Please keep reposting this, so that many will see it:
Linden Labs is a California Company. This type of action does come under the California Attorney General's Juristiction as it could be considered Consumer Fraud, according to my attorney.
If MANY of us contact the California Attorney General, they will investigate. Here is the contact information for the Attorney General's office:
Attorney General's Office
California Department of Justice
Attn: Public Inquiry Unit
P.O. Box 944255
Sacramento, CA 94244-2550
(916) 322-3360
I would suggest calling them AND writing them. Please keep the following in mind when you do:
1. Their office is in the same time zone as Linden Labs, they are open from 9:00 am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
2. Be polite. Remember, they are just a fact collector and they are always on the side of the consumer.
3. Be clear and have a talking plan. Most likely, the person you speak to, will not know anything about Second Life, so be prepared to clearly explain how Second Life works and why you believe their actions to be illegal and immoral.
4. Know Linden Labs Contact Information:
Linden Labs, 945 Battery Street, San Francisco, CA 94111
5. Don't fear retialation from Second Life in any way. In California that would be a criminal act. They may not suspend cancel your account, or act in any adverse way against you for attempting to exersize your legal rights.
Good luck everyone.

Both of these Open Space sims actually built by the Moles who work for Linden Lab. Both of these Open Space sims are perfect examples of hypocricy and deception on the part of Linden Lab.
This is a prime example and can actually be used as evidence against them in a court of law that they are indeed in violation of the AntiTrust laws of the United States. They are monopolozing the economy and market to benifit them, giving them an unfair and unrealistic advantage over their competitors, the users of Second Life.
Speaking of attorneys, my lawyer has kindly offered to represent the users of SL (probono) pertaining to the Open Space sim issue. You can contact him via his website:
http://www.ralphgaboury.com/
He is currently setting up an official petition to present to Linden Lab.
Once again, I really do love Second Life and normally I support Linden Lab on many of their policies but this time are they are just wrong. This action will hurt more than 50% of SL users. It will destroy the virtual and even real life dreams of many. I sincerely hope that they rethink this decision carefully.

Reading the comments on Jack’s most recent post about openspace sims makes me think Stuart is right. After LL shifts policy, which we know they will do, the furor will eventually die down and people will move on. It happens OVER and OVER and OVER in SL.

Weighing in on Voids
Getting right to the point what Jack Linden did was plain frigging stupid and arbitrary. His actions display his utter lack of knowledge about the SL economy and it shows his utter contempt for the SL community in general. When the new pricing scheme was announced in March the also new policy for voids encouraged the so called abuse to occur.
