Best last line regarding the openspace sim controversy:

From Wagner James Au on Gigaom:

“Still, one thing remains clear: “I’m moving to OpenSim!” has already become the metaverse version of the “I’m moving to Canada!” threat we hear every U.S. Presidential election.”

Dispatches from the metaverse : Linden CEO: Price Change Needed for Optimal Second Life Experience
Author : RightAsRain Rimbaud Posted : October 30 2008 23:47:02

Hamlet gets special communique from Linden Lab bunker posted at Gigacom: In a statement provided by his publicist, Kingdon told me, “We understand that this price adjustment will affect businesses and other projects of some our Second Life Residents,” and emphasized the cost increases were only directed at select landowners, who have until January 2009 to adjust themselves to the new rates. “To be clear,” Kingdon continued, “this price adjustment affects only a portion of land in Second Life; it does not apply to private islands or regular mainland property. We made this change to ensure an optimal Second Life experience for all Residents.”

After a tip off by someone I'll refer to as "Dark Baron Voice" (thanks for the chat log too) I made my way to Ruth's Retreat for an office hour that had no howling mob, largely because we couldn't move due to the major lag caused by so many residents trying to get into at least two sims. I'm not sure how many people were there as I was afraid to open the map in case I crashed. Indeed I couldn't even fully replace my wizard's outfit as I didn't want to be ejected for indecent exposure as it was taking so long to change clothing.

Protest at Linden Estate Services

Protest at Linden Estate Services

I imagine most people have heard the news about the increase in prices in Open Space sims.  And most of you have probably read the updated article from Linden Lab.  Some of you will have taken part in protests, voted for the JIRA, taken part in discussions on the Forum or in sims.

Not Possible IRL : Mark Kingdon - Come down, come down from your Ivory Tower and listen to your Residents: A dose of perspective
Author : Bettina Tizzy Posted : October 31 2008 03:34:00
The first 100 days as the commander of a company should be a time for absorbing information, discovering the strengths and weaknesses of the team, and putting all those puzzle pieces together. You became Linden Lab's CEO and adult supervisor in mid-March of this year, which would put you at about the 225 days mark, or 8 1/2 months. 225 days later, Mark Kingdon (aka M Linden), I'm disappointed in ... Virtual Protest Threatens Linden Lab’s Profitability

Wagner James Au, Thursday, October 30, 2008 at 12:47 PM PT

I contacted freshly minted Linden CEO Mark Kingdon for his comments about the protest. In a statement provided by his publicist, Kingdon told me, “We understand that this price adjustment will affect businesses and other projects of some our Second Life Residents,” and emphasized the cost increases were only directed at select landowners, who have until January 2009 to adjust themselves to the new rates. “To be clear,” Kingdon continued, “this price adjustment affects only a portion of land in Second Life; it does not apply to private islands or regular mainland property. Author : SLHamlet Posted : October 31 2008 08:01:50
Friday is the day I highlight remarkable posts around the Second Life blogosphere, but the trouble is, nearly all of it seems devoted to the Openspace pricing controversy. The day the turmoil started, Vint Falken counted over forty posts on... ... More >>

Around the Grid with Harper : Vint Falken — List of Blogs on Openspace Controversy
Author : Harper Posted : October 31 2008 14:30:24

A quickie note here:  Vint Falken has a list of at least 40 articles on the Openspace flap on his original piece.  Vint is one of the more read and outspoken bloggers in Second Life, and his article is pretty good; go give it a look for his opinions, and those of many others.  I wish I’d found it before, but Vint has his own domain, and so he doesn’t show up on wordpress.com’s tag surfer.  (I don’t recall him in the Technorati list, either.)
